As the Official Tour Operator to the Comrades Marathon, we were all very sad to see the cancellation of this iconic event in 2020. We are now all looking forward to travelling out to Durban to take part in 2021. However, in the meantime, we have been super excited about the Comrades Race the Legends Virtual Event, which will take place on the 14th June 2020.
We had a great strong team coming from all over the world to join us this year in South Africa and we’re proud to say that the support has been absolutely incredible for the virtual event too. Africa Marathons currently has nearly 50 entrants across all distances and again from all over the world.
Our Africa Marathons Ambassadors – ‘Project Marathon Girl’ – Jordan Foster and ‘The Running Dan’ – Danny O’Reilly have joined. Our Africa Marathons Coach – Nick Bester and his beautiful wife Taryn will also be joining us. Both company directors Rob Morley and Clyde Beaty have also taken on the Comrades Race the Legends challenge! Our Team Physio Gemma Oates, Operations Manager Nicole Shaw and Website Guru Gareth Foster have also joined in on the fun!
The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) last month launched its one and only officially sanctioned virtual race, ‘Race the Comrades Legends’ which promises to be The Ultimate Virtual Race. There are so many great virtual events happening at the moment. Why is it that this event has done so well?
Most of us have been training alone and long to feel part of a close-knit running community as before. The ‘Race the Comrades Legends’ provides the platform to engage with other runners again. So even though you’re running alone you are still running with over 11,000 runners (and counting) from all over the world with 67 participating nations.
The official Comrades Marathon website will include an online functionality where runners can virtually compete, run with and in a fun and interactive way, compare with each other and the likes of Bruce Fordyce, Frith van der Merwe, Samuel Tshabalala and many others after the race.
The virtual series allowed for a number of shorter distances to in included. You can choose from 5km, 10km, 21km, 45km or 90km distances.
A projection of a possible Comrades time over the shorter distances will be made, for example: a person entering the 10km race can be motivated to see that they can potentially compete in a Comrades in the future.
Additional comparison results will be published online in a personal results interface supplying the participants with a variety of interesting, and engaging content. Every entrant will also receive a digital race number prior to the race, a Virtual Medal and Certificate immediately after the race, personalised results comparisons. All finishers will also receive a real medal, which will be distributed as soon as possible after the race in terms of Lockdown Regulations.
All you have to do is post an image of yourself on Race Day and tag us @africamarathons and your ‘social distanced’ running partner and include the hashtags #RaceTheComradesLegends
#ComradesGB #AfricaMarathonsComradesTeam. So what are you waiting for?
Join Team Africa Marathons on 14 June 2020 as we run this epic event all over the world, yet together & united.
