Why run the Comrades Marathon in 2020?
The History of the Comrades Marathon
The Comrades Marathon is steeped in history. It is the world’s largest and oldest ultra marathon race. The first race was held in 1921, and with the exception of a break during World War II, it has been run every year since. 2020 is an exciting year to run as it marks the 95th Comrades Marathon.
Since the Comrades Marathon’s inception, over 300,000 athletes have completed it. In its first year, there were just 16 finishers out of 34 starters. Its success has grown significantly over the years and in 2020, there are 27500 places available.
The Comrades Marathon incredible atmosphere
If you’ve ever seen a video clip of the Comrades Marathon start, you’ll see how incredible and extraordinary the start line is. The race starts in the dark and the atmosphere is absolutely electric. The famous ‘Chariots of Fire’ song that is played will no doubt give you goosebumps! During the race, there is so much camaraderie amongst the runners, and the support is amazing, especially towards the finish. As the 2020 Comrades Marathon is a ‘Down Run’ and finishes in Durban, it has beautiful views of the coastline in the last part of the race, which definitely helps runners keep going during the last few tough kilometres.
The Comrades Marathon Medal
The Comrades Medal is regarded by many as one of the most prized medals a runner can achieve. What is also so special is that there are different medals for certain finishing times and positions. The 2020 medal will also be a 95th commemorative designed medal, so don’t miss this one. Here are the medals there are to be achieved:
