Get Your Cape Town Marathon Entry In – It’s Calling

Cape Town Marathon will make its debut as an Abbott World Marathon Majors Candidate Race on October 16, 2022.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon will also be an official AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group Qualifying Event on October 16, 2022. The race was officially named as a candidate race toward the end of August 2021, making this the first marathon on the African continent to join the three-year assessment process.

The return of Cape Town Marathon in 2021

In October 2021, this fast marathon was the first road race, and second mass participation event, to return to the roads in 2021 after the world went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was truly exciting for Africa Marathons.

Although the field was limited there was still some quality local, African and international runners celebrating the return of an in-person sporting event in South Africa. South Africa’s Stephen Mokoka took the men’s win and Kenyan Lydia Simiyu in her debut marathon stunned the quality field smashing the ladies course record.

Plans for Cape Town Marathon 2022

Cape Town Marathon CEO Barry van Blerk said: “Planning is already underway to welcome even more local and international runners to the Mother City in 2022. The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon usually attracts thousands of runners from over 80 countries, and we expect that the event’s AbbottWMM candidacy and Age Group Qualifier status will prompt increased interest to run the event and enjoy the sights and sounds of one of the most spirited countries in the world.”

Cape Town is one of the top tourist destinations in the world and there is certainly plenty to do to attract runners from around the globe. The race route passes by the foot of Table Mountain (one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature), as well as some of the city’s historic landmarks. Outside of the race, van Blerk also stresses how much is on offer for runners visiting the Mother City.

Cape Town Marathon has already produced a number of qualified athletes for the 2022 AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Championships. In addition in 2022, organizers are also offering international participants a guaranteed entry to the event should it ultimately become an Abbott World Marathon Majors race.
