Cape Town Marathon – the road to the world’s 7th Abbott World Marathon Majors

Just more than a week ago the news broke that the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has officially been confirmed as an Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) Candidate – the first marathon in Africa to be nominated as a candidate event. This means so much not only to Cape Town and South Africa but also to Africa as a continent.

Current and future sponsors are confident

The current headline sponsor, Sanlam, now celebrating its 8th year of sponsorship of the Cape Town Marathon is excited to be part of this iconic achievement and also believes that it, together with the Cape Town Marathon will be able to achieve much in terms of sport and economic growth with the visibility created by this status.

Adidas will also come on board as a partner from 2022 and with its rich history in running hope to attract a large field of elite runners to take part in the marathon. Adidas is also a sponsor of two World Marathon Majors – the Boston Marathon and BMW Berlin Marathon.

The Road from Candidate to Major

The announcement marks the commencement of a multi-year evaluation process conducted by AbbottWMM. In addition to the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, China’s Chengdu Marathon is also currently an AbbottWMM candidate, while Singapore Marathon recently withdrew its candidacy.

In order to go from Candidate to Major, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon will be required to meet certain criteria for three years and if successful, will join an elite group of races namely, London Marathon, New York Marathon, Boston Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Berlin Marathon and Tokyo Marathon, as a new member of the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors in 2025.

Cape Town Marathon already meets many of the requirements in becoming an Abbott World Marathon Majors and continued enhancements to the event are planned to ensure everything possible is done to achieve the full requirements in 3 year’s time.
