Team Africa Marathons – One month to Comrades 2022

It’s official! We are just one month away from the biggest marathon in Africa! We thought we would get our Africa Marathons Comrades 2022 Coach, Nick Bester, to give our team some advice on what to do one month out from Comrades 2022.

3 Crucial Things You Need To Be On Top Of One Month Out From Your Marathon

1. Training

For a race like Comrades Marathon, it’s really important to ensure you line up as fresh as possible. Cutting down from 3 weeks out, followed by a 2-week taper is highly recommended. Remember, no more fitness can be gained in the 2 – 3 weeks prior to race day, you could only jeopardise your race if you push too hard during this phase.

2. Nutrition

It’s crucial to test out and replicate your exact race day nutrition in the build-up to Comrades. I recommend testing it on your longest run. If it works, don’t change it!

3. Running Kit and Gear

You must test your exact race day kit prior to Comrades. Remember don’t be shy to use Vaseline.

Know your race day shoes. It’s never a good idea to wear new shoes on race day. If you know what shoes you’re running in, I often tend to do a few runs in them to wear them in. Once they feel ready, I put them aside and save them for race day. This could be anything from running 50kms – 200kms in them.

Comrades 2022 Team – First Group Training Session!

On Saturday 23 July, our Comrades 2022 team had their first group training session together. Everyone absolutely smashed it, each hitting a distance of approximately 50-60km/30-40 miles on a route around Richmond Park.

The team was full of energy as they made their way around the route.

Our runners were looking very strong and definitely work well together as a team, supporting each other throughout the run.

It was an amazing opportunity to meet and run with the people who will be there beside you on race day. 

Especially getting to meet and train with our Africa Marathons Comrades coach, Nick Bester. He was there to help the team and give tips on nutrition, form and much more. 

Nick Bester and Best Athletics helped out by supplying our team with an aid station, fully stocked with all the necessary nutrition our runners would need throughout the run.

And of course, we had our loyal supporters on the sidelines, making sure to keep the spirits high in the heat!

What an awesome way to spend a Saturday morning!
