March 11, 2021‘Comrades Centenary Hope Challenge’ is Launched
March 30, 2021‘Race The Comrades Legends’ Profit Share
For those of you who missed last years inaugural ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ event, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) decided to stage a virtual running event after having to cancel Comrades Marathon in 2020. The virtual event turned out to be a huge success!
Through the CMA’s extensive network of ambassadors, influencers, running clubs, tour operators, sponsors and other notable partnerships, the virtual event hosted in June last year, proved to be one of the most successful initiatives globally.
The success of ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ in 2020
By the time entries had closed for the CMA’s very first virtual event, ‘Race The Comrades Legends’, a total of 43788 entrants from 102 participating nations had signed up to be a part of it.
The CMA challenged clubs and various organisations to invite and enter more than 100 participants in the virtual event. Africa Marathons is proud to have been one of the few to do so, having entered 124 participants.
In light of that, a total of 31 participating clubs, organisations and ambassadors received their share of more than ZAR730,000.00 as part of the profit share agreement promised by the CMA when launching the inaugural virtual event to entities who reached the 100 entry target. Africa Marathons decided to use our profit share in aiding an organisation who works and supports the local KZN community. We hope to give more details on this in the near future.
The Comrades Marathon Association expressed immense gratitude
CMA Chairperson, Cheryl Winn has thanked South Africans and the world at large for supporting what has been, The Ultimate Virtual Race, making it an all-round inclusive running affair, attracting runners, their families and friends, and showcasing the camaraderie and triumph of the human spirit in one epic event, especially in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the subsequent lockdown and amidst the social distancing directives issued by governments around the world.
Iphupho Lami / Dare To Dream
Winn went on to say, “Little did we know that our slogan ‘Iphupho Lami / Dare To Dream’ for the cancelled #Comrades2020 would resonate so strongly with the running community that so many participants would dare to dream with us and be part of ‘Race The Comrades Legends’. This was truly an epic inaugural virtual race, in a big part, thanks to our ambassadors, influencers, running clubs, tour operators, sponsors and partners.”
CMA General Manager, Keletso Totlhanyo says, “So many people had a hand in ensuring the success of our inaugural virtual event. The support we received was just phenomenal. Many of the recipients of the profit-share have generously donated their funds to worthy causes and our official charities and this is what the spirit of Comrades is all about. We would like to thank each one of you.”
