Comrades Marathon 2021 is currently scheduled to take place on Sunday, 13 June 2021 which is anticipated to be the 95th edition of The Ultimate Human Race and the 47th Down Run, starting at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and finishing at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
The Comrades Marathon Association Board had previously undertaken to make further announcements regarding requirements for qualification and the staging of the race by mid-January.
However, with the onset of the second wave of COVID-19, the consequent extended lockdown, further cancellation of sporting events and related developments, the CMA Board has decided to postpone its monthly Board meeting until it has consulted and obtained further information, including possible directives from KwaZulu-Natal Athletics, Athletics South Africa, Government and other relevant stakeholders for consideration in deciding on a way forward.
CMA Chairperson, Cheryl Winn has advised runners to please bear with them as they chart a way forward, considering the health and welfare of all athletes, volunteers, stakeholders and in the interests of the race.
Winn says, “Runners will be advised of the outcome of such talks once we have engaged with all athletics and other important stakeholders towards hosting an event that is safe, secure and possible under the prevailing circumstances and government directives that we find ourselves under.”
Winn adds, “While we are extremely mindful of runners’ impatience and eagerness to know, it is only once we ourselves obtain further information, that we will be able to share details of the Comrades Marathon Centenary Celebrations that have been scheduled for this year, which will include information on the entry process, qualifying criteria and other Comrades developments.
Winn also says, “For the sake of our runners and all other stakeholders, we sincerely wish that we had a crystal ball to foretell the future, but alas we do not, and therefore circumstances and consequent decisions are beyond our control. Following the lead of Athletics South Africa, we anticipate making further announcements by mid-February.”
