Get ready to lace up those running shoes and brace yourself for an uphill battle! The 2024 Comrades Marathon is officially going to be an Up Run, and we’re here to spill the beans on what you can expect.
The 97th Comrades Marathon’s going Up
The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) Board recently gathered, and they came out swinging with the news we’ve all been eagerly waiting for. Drumroll, please… The 97th edition of this epic ultramarathon extravaganza will kick off in the sun-soaked coastal city of Durban and wrap things up in the charming inland city of Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, June 9, 2024.
The good news was confirmed by CMA Chairperson, Mqondisi Ngcobo, saying, “Runners have been awaiting confirmation of the direction of next year’s race and we are pleased to announce that the 2024 Comrades Marathon will finish in the City of Choice, Pietermaritzburg.”
Getting back to ‘normal service’ after two down runs
Now, here’s the scoop. The last time we ventured on an Up Run adventure was back in 2019. Yep, it’s been a minute! But that’s not the whole story. Due to Covid-19, we had to take a little break in 2020 & 2021. The 2022 and 2023 editions were both Down Runs. So, you could say we’re going back to our roots in 2024, sticking to the tradition of Up Runs in even years and Down Runs in odd years.
But wait, there’s more! Race Director Rowyn James and the team are currently scoping out the options to find the perfect finish line venue. So stay tuned for news on that.
Mark your calendars! The 97th Comrades Marathon is set to kick off on June 9, 2024. Put on those running shoes, practice your uphill strut, and get ready for an epic adventure from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. The clock will start ticking at 05:30 in Durban, and you’ll have a solid 12 hours to conquer the course and earn those bragging rights. See you at the starting line!
