Comrades Marathon 2023 Provisional Results Are Out
The Comrades Marathon 2023, organized by the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA), witnessed an extraordinary #Comrades2023 Champions Prizegiving Breakfast, sponsored by Brand South Africa, held at the Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel on Monday, 12 June 2023. This event gathered the winners, Tete Dijana and Gerda Steyn, who triumphed for the second time in this iconic race, along with other outstanding participants, CMA sponsors and partners, esteemed government officials, road-running authorities, and media representatives.
In the Men’s Race, Tete Dijana from Nedbank Running Club claimed victory, crossing the finish line in an impressive time of 5:13:58. His remarkable performance shattered David Gatebe’s long-standing record of 5:18:19 from 2016 by more than four minutes. On the women’s side, Gerda Steyn secured her well-deserved triumph, completing the race in a remarkable time of 5:44:54. By surpassing Frith van der Merwe’s 34-year Women’s Best Time of 5:54:43 by over nine minutes, Steyn cemented her place in history.
Mqondisi Ngcobo, the Chairperson of CMA, extended his warmest congratulations to the 2023 Comrades Marathon Champions, emphasizing the extraordinary nature of this year’s event. He stated, “The Comrades Marathon 2023 has truly been an exceptional display of athletic prowess. It is with great pride that we introduce the world to our 96th Comrades Marathon Champions. We commend these exceptional athletes for their remarkable performances, which embody the spirit of Proudly South African, and we celebrate their victories and the establishment of new Best Times.”
The Comrades Marathon 2023 saw overwhelming participation, with over 16,000 participants starting the race. Astoundingly, nearly 15,000 runners successfully completed the gruelling course, resulting in a record-breaking finish rate of 92.68%. This achievement marks the highest finish rate ever recorded in the illustrious history of The Ultimate Human Race, the Comrades Marathon.
