Welcome to the Cape Town Marathon

There cannot be many better settings for running than in Cape Town, truly one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in the world and now home to AFRICA'S ONLY IAAF GOLD LABEL MARATHON!

The inaugural Sanlam Cape Town Marathon was run by a small, competitive field in September 2007 and the event has grown steadily ever since, developing into a top city marathon that brings together world runners, from elite athletes to wheelchair racers, as well as first-time and social runners.

The event is actually over a whole weekend and is a real festival of running that along with the main event - the marathon (42.2km) - also includes a 10km ‘Peace Run’, a relaxed 4.2km Fun Run and adventurous 22km and 12km Trail Runs around the beautiful Signal Hill and Lion’s Head.

The marathon is designed, not only to take in Cape Town's spectacular natural beauty, but also to enable runners to traverse the City’s rich historical sites. Taking place in September means there is relief from the heavy winter rains and frequent strong winds in the months prior, giving way to earlier sunrises and much milder temperatures. It is some of the best weather in Cape Town for a long distance running event.

Organisers encourage everyone to get into the spirit of the whole weekend. Family and friends can visit the vibrant supporter zone and enjoy food stalls, beer gardens, EXPO, live music and fancy dress fun!

Pre or post marathon the options are endless across South Africa. Spend a few more days exploring the city's main attractions including Table Mountain, Robben Island or the Boulders Beach Penguin Colony, or simply wander around the vibrant Waterfront, dine out at the many top restaurants, or relax on the beaches of Camps Bay.

Of course if you have a bit longer then we can organise trips to stay out at the world famous Winelands, go whale-watching in and around Hermanus or head out along the beautiful Garden Route. Another massive draw is to experience safari in the many game reserves across the country or explore the battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal. There is so much to experience in South Africa, so do speak to us about adding on time in this special country.
